Lesson 5: The Sweet Science

Students of any age can think critically about how to construct a fair investigation; help them practice this important skill by exploring the impact of different variables on the taste and texture of cupcakes. After your class selects a favorite recipe, don’t keep them all for yourself — use your cupcakes to form a friendship with another class and to teach them about what you’ve discovered about the science of baking!

This investigation involves some cooking, so you may wish to take the batter home overnight to cook it. Or, talk with your kitchen staff to see if there is a time your class can use an oven to create some delicious cupcakes — make sure to thank them with one of your class’s favorites!
